Spotify Hit by Significant Service Outage During 20th Anniversary Feature Launch
Thousands of listeners reported technical issues with the streaming giant on Tuesday, May 12, as a service outage coincided with the rollout of the new Spotify 20 personalized history feature.
The music stopped for thousands of listeners on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as Spotify experienced a significant service outage. According to Downdetector, more than 22,000 users reported problems starting around 1 p.m. ET, with many reporting that the app went silent or stopped mid-song. Spotify confirmed the technical difficulties at 12:49 p.m. ET via social media, stating that they were aware of the issues and investigating. Users reported a range of frustrations, including the inability to search for music and being unable to log into their accounts. The timing of the outage was particularly notable, occurring the same day Spotify rolled out its new "Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)" feature. This mobile-exclusive experience allows users to look back at their entire listening history in celebration of the company's 20th anniversary. Originating in Sweden in 2006, the streaming giant has grown to serve 761 million monthly users worldwide, including 293 million premium subscribers. While the company celebrated its milestone with newly released lists of top-streamed artists and podcasts, users on X were quick to point out the irony of the technical failure, with one commenter noting, "20th birthday and ur app is down."
